Freezer doesn't freeze

Yesterday I opened my freezer and found that everything had thawed out. There was a small film of ice on the back wall, about halfway down. I've now left it off for 24 hours (with the door open), and drained water from the back area near the motor. I've just briefly turned it on and the motor runs, and I feel cool air being pumped around the inside. Before I turn it on a try a full scale test, is there anything that maybe should be checked / replaced? Note that it has always been extremely noisy when the fluid is circulating through the pipes.
